These receptors are made up of protein molecules that contain a specific grouping of chemicals, following in a specific three-dimensional shape that allows them to connect, to the molecule being detected.
Disease-causing microbes all have a specific chemical on their structure that relate to their structure and function. The first responder's cells have their particular structure on the plasma membrane that can detect them. It's been said that the immune cells of the system are capable of identifying over one thousand different diseases.
